    It looks like the plan is to air layer the top, and grow new branches from that younger tree, which will eventually fuse with the original, then cut the original tree back to end up with 2 much smaller trees?

      The grey stuff used for the thread graft at 7:00 is likely a type of cut paste. An alternative that is much cheaper and more widely available is “duct seal” putty that is available at most home improvement stores (in the US, definitely available at Home Depot & Lowe’s).
      It is widely used by bonsai enthusiasts in the US with great success.

    I heard Bonsai is tree torture, is this accurate?

    • @triberium_
      @triberium_ 2 года назад

      Nope, trees can't feel pain, pain is an animal thing.

    • @Rick-the-Swift
      @Rick-the-Swift 2 года назад

      @@triberium_ You sound just like billions of other arrogant humans who think pain and sickness is only something animals can feel, while it's been proven scientifically that plants not only feel pain, but have emotions as well. It's people like you who make it easy for others to destroy so much of God's beautiful creations. 😟

    • @Rick-the-Swift
      @Rick-the-Swift 2 года назад

      blakespower, Bonsai can be considered a form of tree torture at times, like in this video, but other times with caring, loving hands, Bonsai can actually make a tree very happy, and extend it's life span considerably, at times even almost indefinitely. It's all about intent, and what kinds of methods are employed. I imagine this artist has had many a fine specimens tossed into the brush pile when they didn't turn out as hoped.

    • @triberium_
      @triberium_ 2 года назад

      @@Rick-the-Swift Your thinking is all over the place. We humans feel pain because we have a nervous system that includes a brain that makes us "feel" stuff. A brain is needed to have feelings. Now plants sure have internal systems that help it detect when its being damaged and such, but that does not make it PAIN like we feel. The plant if anything just KNOWS that it is being messed with but to say it FEELS anything is absurd because you need a BRAIN that receives the chemical changes and then INTERPRET that as PAIN, but since PAIN is a human thing, and humans love to attribute human QUALITIES to other animals. So if you want to call the natural reaction of a plant to it being modified pain, sure you can do that BUT just know that is PLANT PAIN which is in no was like HUMAN PAIN which is processed by us and affects us greatly but in order for that to happen we need a BRAIN to process those signals and makes us FEEL that pain.

    • @Rick-the-Swift
      @Rick-the-Swift 2 года назад

      @@triberium_ Yeah yeah, I've heard it, "a fish feels less pain when it's hooked than humans because it doesn't have as highly developed brains or nervous systems as US humans". Who's to say? A mere ache or itch to me may seem like torture to you. To each, their own, yada yada.
      The vast majority of what you understand about your own physiology is likely a misunderstanding because you go around just repeating what you read or hear others say, and you agree with the explanations that you prefer.
      There is strong evidence that brainless jellyfish can taste, see, hear, feel, smell, and yes even seem to make use of extra sensory perception, but I guess since the little jellies aren't the Einstein you seem to be, and they are too dumb to explain themselves to us highly evolved humans, we'll just have to take the scientists' words for the studies they've presented.
      And while the open minded people are out there making their breakthrough discoveries, why don't you just go right on thinking you understand how all living things on Earth perceive the universe. I'm sure you will help many others decide it's morally ok to put plants through their own many stages of agony just to satisfy the natural human urge to shape things to our desire, regardless of what other precious life forms are experiencing🤨

    Questions:
    Why are you drilling holes into the trunk and what are you putting through those holes?

    • @OrthographyPoliceman
      @OrthographyPoliceman 3 года назад +2

      The holes make it possible to put young, vital maples - which still have roots themselves - through the old trunk. Once they have grown a little bit and the callusses of the trees have merged together, the younger trees become part of the larger tree's organism. At that point (12:55) you are able to cut the stems of the younger trees.
      In short: It's artificially created back-budding.
      At least that's the theory. I'm curious about an update if that worked out.

      Patience, it will come in 2023, after the cutting next year.
      If everything works out.
      It all takes time, all living things do.
      Some life, more than others.
      Trees are ancient organisms that have been around for hundreds of millions of years, in much the same form, and that form has worked for nature, all this time.
      In short, they need a little more time than us.
      Give them that time, and you will see the beauty in the result of actions like these.
